This was a fun experiment. Some of the Epic Tales worked out better than others and I got a lot more repeat characters than I expected (and none of others). Here’s a pic of the original illustration by Tom Gauld

#1 Dungeons of Daggorath: A first-person, real-time, fantasy game on the TRS-80/Tandy/Radio Shack Color Computer from 1982.

My friend Philip had an old TRS-80 and this was one of the few games he had for it. It was intense, especially for 3rd and 4th graders. You play in a vector-based first-person dungeon where the only soundtrack is your own beating heart (which beats faster as you take damage or run from monsters or drink the wrong potions etc) and the even increasing sound of encroaching enemies.

The commands had to be typed out and the monsters fought in real time so if you made mistakes, they’d put a pounding on you. I don’t think we ever made it past the third level, considering we couldn’t get all the torches to work and without those you couldn’t see (or hit) the magical monsters on the lower levels. This is well before the days of internet help forums or even printed user guides so we were on our own. Even watching this video of the first level made my hands sweat and when that damned smiley fart blob appears… man, you knew you were in trouble.

#2 Crystal Hammer: Breakout clone on the Amiga

I got an Amiga 2000 in highschool. Not sure whose idea it was to get me one of those or where we got it from, but it cemented my love for brickbreakers. Also this had the best opening soundtrack of any game I’ve ever played. Here’s someone doing a long run on it (and a taste of the soundtrack).

#3 Flashback: Platform puzzle game on the Sega Genesis

In college, my friend Nate and I rented this game on a whim. It was amazing with all the rotoscoping and jumping and climbing and puzzle solving. We put it on in the morning when Nate’s girlfriend went to work and we were still playing when she got back. We made it all the way to the end in a day, but it was super hard.

Another classic from college/post-college. Nate, Pat and I send way too long pixel hunting on this one and still never beat it. Leave it to Lucal Arts to put together something spectacular and beautiful.
