Friday Five: 12/29/11

The ensemble “Birch” – “Pryalitsa” (google translated)

A hypnotic Russian folk dance with a wonderful color palette and a song as catchy as Trololo. In parts it doesn’t look like their legs are moving and the ladies are strapped to skateboards. Sort of the opposite of the Rockettes. There’s an “in Soviet Russia…” joke there somewhere but I’m too lazy to make it.

Three Cubes Colliding

Three Cubes Colliding from Jimandtonic on Vimeo.

This is a really cool 3-D printed art project. Some neat shifting focus shots in the beginning but the real money is at the 2:00 mark where they actually get the thing floating.

One bag’s journey through Delta

Follow a bag with 6 cameras through the mysterious black flaps at Delta Airlines.

Don Cherry’s Piano Desk

Nice execution of a simple concept. I only with there was a sustained note from the piano when the OTHER announcer pounds his fist on the desk. A duet!

Time-lapse Christmas Crowd

X-Mas Zoo from Ben Lean on Vimeo.

By Ben Lean filmed in Distillery District and Eaton Centre, Toronto Ontario. I love time-lapse stuff and this guy seems to have a bunch of it. Check out South Meadows from related videos too.

30 Characters Challenge Accepted. Part 3: 21-30

Here are the last 10 characters from my 30 day challenge:

21.  Unblemished Sketchbook Man - pencil
Unblemished Sketchbook Man #30characters #21

Unblemished Sketchbook Man adorns the first page of my new sketchbook. I use the cheap-o $3 jobbies from Wal-mart because, who cares!? I hate drawing the first thing on the first page, but USM was here to save the day.

22. Tammy – colored pencil
Tammy #30characters #22

Tammy (which was a mental modification of Tandy in my head) came together as the cranky mother of this happy robot. No skateboard though.

23. Mammer Jammer - pencil
Mammer Jammer #30characters #23

Mammer is the best roller skater on the block and wears the awesomest Jamz.

24. Lisa Pizza – ballpoint pen
Lisa Pizza #30characters #24

Lisa is a cheerleader. Her head is a slice of pizza (with broccoli).

25. Snakeman Jackson – Sharpie and highlighter
Snakeman Jackson #30characters #25

Snakeman Jackson (who reminded me of “Wolfman” Jack the second I finished him) makes no sense to me at all. Corey had written the quote in my sketchbook before I drew anything. It’s from a line in a song from the opening of our 7th Chill Mix.

26. Sgt. Pinkerton – Sharpie and colored pencil

Sgt. Pinkerton

Sgt. Pinkerton has a pink skull and a ray gun (not to be confused with the Red Skull) and is apparently American… and an astronaut.

27. Dr. Nash - Sharpie

Dr. Nash, the scientist with unfortunate news. #30characters #27

Dr. Nash has made a very unfortunate scientific discovery.

28. Bad Banjo Blob - pencil
Bad Banjo Blob #30characters #28

Bad Banjo Blob is a sentient glob of congealed High Fructos Corn Syrup. He plays the banjo quite well actually.

29. Pancake the Kitty – Sharpie and Crayola marker

Pancake the kitty #30characters #29

Jonah described Pancake to me one day at the playground. I made mental notes and drew him/her here. “A fat white kitty with three green eyes and magical powers named Pancake” is what he said.

30.  Lady Hook - pencil

Lady Hook #30characters #30

More like “Lady I didn’t feel like drawing hands” amiright?

Yeah! I completed the challenge and didn’t crap out! I have some extra-credit for this challenge that I hope to do soon. Stay tuned.

My pal Chris Dlugosz came up with a fun challenge. He generated some random clouds and had people fill in the things they saw. Here’s mine:

#Musicmonday – The World Goes Boom – DJ Earworm

United State of Pop 2011 (World Go Boom) – DJ Earworm

Here’s a mash-up of all the top hits of 2011. I listened to about half of it and only recognized a single snippet of Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People and Born This Way by Lady Gaga. This barely registers to me as music, but I can tell DJ Earworm did a good job of cramming it all together.

It’s that time of year again!

12 Daze of Christmas – Fay McKay

A Vegas showroom classic.

Drummer boy by a robot drummer and a printer

The future is now!

Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer

I loved this song as a child. How could I not? It was inescapable!

Feliz Navidad

It’s not Christmas until I hear this song piped in over a retail establishment’s sound system. I cannot help but howl along in the middle of the frozen foods aisle.

Pogues – Fairytale of New York

This song has the most depressing intro of any Christmas song. “It’s was Christmas Eve, in the drunk tank…” whooof.

This has been the soundtrack of our morning. It’s been going on for a least an hour.

Friday Five: 12/23/11

Tutting?

Apparently it’s a thing? Sort of the robot dance for your fingers. There’s full body tutting as well. They make it look easy.

Bill Hicks on marijuana’s effect on evolution

I pretty much agree with everything this guy’s saying. I don’t know much about Bill Hicks, but I eager to look up some more. I’ve heard he was a big influence on Louis CK.

TPiR Cliffhanger Theme

My favorite. You know you know it! Yo dee oh dee Oh dee oh dee OH dee oh dee doooh OH dee oh dee doooh OH dee oh dee doooooooh

Old man shufflin’

Some old-timer got over-dubbed. Hilarity ensues. Reminds me of the Six Flags promo of the old man on the bus.

Drunk History Christmas Edition

Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, Jim Carrey act out Twas the Night Before Christmas read by a very drunk historian.

30 Characters Challenge Accepted. Part 2: 12-20

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tod @ 11:18 am

Here are some more characters from the 30 characters challenge hosted by these guys.

12. Fat Duck – Sharpie and colored pencil

Fat Duck #30characters #12

I can’t remember what inspired Fat Duck, but I can see him in a casual flash game. He probably bounces around smashing things.

13.  One-trip Hunt and Johnny Catpants - Sharpie

One Trip Hunt & Johnny Catpants #30characters #13 #14

True story, bro!

14. Dance-pop Majoriz – shitty near-death ballpoint (hence the scribbles) and grey maker

Dance-pop Majoriz #30characters #15

This character was inspired by a captcha security phrase. My pen was dying through the whole thing >:( Majoriz looks like she’s having fun but would be a pain in the ass on a long bus trip.

16. Garglebargle – Sharpie and Crayola markers

Garglebargle #30characters #16 #dungeonsanddragons #crayola

Garglebargle looks like the sort of crap I used to craw on my charactersheets when I was bored playing D&D. Garglebargle is a half-fire giant with yellow skin and two swords.

17. Flurp – Sharpie and colored pencils

Flurp #30characters #17

I remember phoning this one in during Regis and Kelly, but then it got a lot of response on Facebook. Flurp is a gelatinous ectoplasmic entity that travels through the universe gobbling Dark Matter. Flurp’s eyes are the size of red-super giant stars.

18. Creegis of the Beegis – Ballpoint pen

Creegis of the Beegis #30characters #18 #Regis

I drew this during Regis’s final episode of Regis and Kelly. Creegis loves volleyball!

19. Dream Woman – Sharpie and hi-lighter

Dream woman #30characters #19

Dream Woman is a benevolent  interstellar traveler whose eternal cosmic imprint on our brains directly inspired the creation of My Little Ponies. Or whatever. These are starting to sound like Balderdash answers. :)

20. Flappa Bird – sharpie and red pencil

Flappa Bird #30characters #20

Flappa Bird was named after a bird with hinged legs Jonah and I built out of Tinker Toys. I think Flappa Bird should be the lead character in his own plastic battery-operated board game for kids.

Work in Progress Wednesdays: Column Quote Caricatures

I just finished my second full year of weekly Column Quotes and am preparing to start on my third. Here are all the caricatures that ran with the puzzles in 2010 and 2011 (though there might be some stragglers from 2009 that I’ll have to dig up sometime). You can follow the pics to my Flickr where you can look at a larger version.

#musicmonday: 1910 Fruitgum Company – Sticky Sticky

1910 Fruitgum Company – Sticky Sticky

Jonah and I were playing our fun new game “Mystery Record” where we pull randomly from the surplus of 45s we’ve acquired and listen for as long as we can tolerate. 1910 Fruitgum Company is the band responsible for the “Yummy Yummy” song that’s probably been whored out to a million commercials. This is not that song. This sounds like something that was recorded in a dorm room. Jonah loves it though. He’s into lo-fi B-sides.
