In the vein of the “banned” porn-style Skittles commercial, this fake knock-off hardcore rap lunchables commercial kinda nails the genre. (NSFW for language and cultural insensitivity). The song is pretty good though. reminds me of the GTA: San Andreas soundtrack.
I already had a sizable collection of Weird Al records before I saw this video and in retrospect Weird Al is responsible for a lot of my musical tastes. I think I saw this video on Nick Rocks (not MTV proper) but it was all owned by the same crap so I think it still counts.
Mark Mothersbaugh has been quoted as saying Weird Al got Devo right better than Devo ever did. Maybe not quite, but it’s close for sure!
The video to this song used to freak me the hell out when I was a kid. Especially the weird leech thing in the water at the 3:37 mark. I will say now, that’s a heck of a music video set and I have to give Simon Le Bon props for strapping himself to the windmill and getting his head dunked repeatedly in the water.
This is the second video I remember seeing on MTV. It was at my grandparent’s neighbor’s house (The Sosnowski’s?) The older sister was a big fan of The Cars and they were the first people I knew who had cable TV… the kind with the bid clicker box at the end of a long cord instead of a remote.
Today is the 30th anniversary of MTV. I was too young for it to register at the time and my family wouldn’t have cable TV for another couple years, but I do have some significant memories of specific videos and thought I’d share them here.
First up is the first video I ever saw on MTV. I was at some hotel room with my family and we decided to turn on MTV to check it out.
This song came out in ’83, so I wasn’t TOO far behind the times. U2 went on to be one of my favorite bands in high school.
Hear this on The Lotus Land show on “>WRIR on the way home from work the other day and had to track them down online to ask what it was.
Lyrics:
Looking to the right,
A turn goes by
But not for too long
Our destination
By your misfortune
We are pulling past
Pulling out
But not for too long
So just embrace it Our destination
Dragging away from the high road
We should find a flock of birds big enough
To pull us up from the long road
Come on. Come with us.
We are falling straight down so don’t lose hope
Land on the earth before we crash into the ground.
Lovesick teenagers don’t ever die.
They will live forever
Even when you’re too old.
And you think you’re no more.
And you know you’re no more. You’ll be
Dragging away from the high road
We should find a flock of birds big enough
To pull us up from the long road
Come on. Come with us.
We are falling straight down so don’t lose hope
Land on the earth before we crash into the ground.
Dragging away from the high road
We should find a flock of birds big enough
To pull us up from the long road
Come on. Come with us.
We are falling straight down so don’t lose hope
Land on the earth before we crash into the ground.
