Ok. Guilty pleasure admission. I love this song. I also like the story in the video. It always reminded me of A Wrinkle in Time for some reason.

30 days of MTV 13 of 30: True Faith – New Order
This song/video was my first exposure to this style of synthy, post-wave dance music. I remember checking this tape out from the library and making my mom play it in the car. My step father hated it and that was ok by me.

Squiggle deeper
Vi Hart takes doodling in math class a level deeper. All her videos blow are great but this one blows my mind.
Rock balancing
This guy has a super-power. plain and simple.
Weird Al mocks Sara
All this recent talk about MTV made me remember watching ALTV whenever he would take over the airwaves. I used to think this was the height of comedy, but now it just seems a little screechy. A lot of MST3K in this and you know, give me a break, I was 13 when this aired. I had a crusty old dubbed VHS tape of this kicking around for the longest time and I remember there were the same three commercials over and over again.
Devo sings Worried Man
The MTV talk also got me thinking about the best/worst movie ever: Human Highway by Neil Young, which features this cameo by Devo as a nuclear clean up crew.
Team iLuminate Dance
I don’t watch America’s Got Talent, but this dance routine is pretty amazing. Nice use of choreographed technology.
30 days of MTV 12 of 30: Beautiful World – Devo
There’s no other song by Devo like this one… mainly because Gerald seems to actually be singing. The video is great and so is the message.

30 days of MTV 11 of 30: Take on Me – Aha (The Literal Version)
Sure… this was voted the best video of all time and everyone has seen it ad nauseum, so here is the literal version. Same video… funnier lyrics. enjoy!

30 days of MTV 10 of 30: It’s the End of The World as We Know it – REM
REM was one of my favorite bands in high school, but before that, I was in lover with the video. I liked to skateboard, I had that hair cut, I liked abandoned buildings and I would totally do dumb shit like this. This video is perfect.

30 days of MTV 9 of 30: They Might Be Giants – Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head
Again this goes back to Weird Al and how he is responsible for most of my musical tastes. During the height of MTV, Al would periodically pirate in and take over the airwaves as ALTV. It was my first introduction to They Might Be Giants and that song was this:

30 days of MTV 8 of 30: Gary Numan – Cars
I’m a big fan of Gary and I love his stuff with the Tubeway Army, but this song always makes me think of roller skating. Always!
This is some classic MTV though with the cheesy chromakey in the tambourine.
#MusicMonday – The Cars: Sad Song
The Cars – Sad Song
The opening riff and hand claps are instantly recognizable as classic Cars but there’s a nice updated quality to it. Same with the video which is equally awesome in its throwback to the 80s while still holding up by today’s standards. Other stuff off their new album “Move Like This” is also good. Check it out!
Lyrics:
Too many screamers
Wearing a mask
Too many dreamers
Looking for the ones that last
Too many eyes
Looking for hope
Too many tears
Looking for a way to cope
It’s no joke
It’s just a sad song
That pulls you along yeah
It’s just a sad song
And it won’t take long
Too many thoughts
Breaking your stride
Too many Jekyll’s
Feeling like a Mr. Hyde
Too many clouds
Darken your day
Too many rain drops
Falling on your thunder bay
Everyday, yeah
It’s just a sad song
That pulls you along yeah
It’s just a sad song
When you hit head on
It’s just a sad song
That pulls you along
It’s just a sad song
And it won’t take long
Too many heartaches
Waiting to strike
Too many clowns
Saying everything’s all right
Too many fires
Scorching your mind
Too many preachers
Saying what you should find
They see the signs
It’s just a sad song
It pulls you along yeah
It’s just a sad song
And it won’t take long
It’s just a sad song,
It pulls you along
It’s just a sad song
And it won’t take long
It’s just a sad song
A sad song
It’s just a sad song
And it won’t take long
It’s just a sad song
A sad song
It’s just a sad song
And it won’t take long

30 days of MTV 7 of 30: Genesis – Land of Confusion
I also loved this song as a kid and even feel like I kind of “got” the message. This is probably some of my earliest exposure to really awesome grotesque style caricatures.
